ELEVENTH HOUR, THE: BENSONHURST {SPECIAL CALL-IN EDITION} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of interview programs that examines current events in New York City. This program is a special call-in edition that followed the broadcast of the documentary, "Frontline: Seven Days in Bensonhurst," which concerned the murder of Yusuf Hawkins and the impact of Hawkins's death on race relations in New York City. Host Robert Lipsyte and his panel of guests discuss the documentary's coverage of the Hawkins murder and examines the controversies and questions surrounding the murder trial. Panel members include Professor Shelby Steele of San Jose State University, who was a correspondent for the Frontline documentary; the Rev. Herbert Daughtry of the House of the Lord Pentecostal Church in New York City; Newsday editorial writer Jim Sleeper; Assemblyman Frank Barbaro (D-Bensonhurst); Esmerelda Simmons, executive director of the Center for Law and Social Justice; Dennis deLeon of the New York City Commission on Human Rights; and Monona Yin of the Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence. Lipsyte questions the panel about the impact of the murder and the trial on race relations in New York, and about the increase in violence toward Asian-Americans. Additionally, the host and the panel members answer four questions that viewers ask over the phone. Other topics discussed include the question of whether the murder and the subsequent events in Bensonhurst are typical of race relations in New York City or exceptions; the question of whether the Frontline documentary accurately portrayed the events; the controversy that the march through Bensonhurst sparked, which was headed by prominent black leaders Mayor David N. Dinkins, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and the Rev. Al Sharpton; the effects of the polarization of different ethnic groups within New York City; the way economics can affect racial tensions; and accomplishments that have occurred since the murder that may improve the situation in Bensonhurst.
