FRONTLINE WITH JUDY WOODRUFF: AIDS - A NATIONAL INQUIRY (TV)
Summary
One in this documentary series hosted by Judy Woodruff. In this edition, Prof. Charles Nesson of Harvard Law School moderates a discussion of the AIDS pandemic that includes a viewing of a controversial documentary entitled "Fabian's Story" about a homeless male prostitute with AIDS. The discussion, broadcast from the National Library of Medicine in Maryland is linked via satellite to Houston, San Francisco, and Denver, where additional panelists add their comments. Nesson leads the group through an introduction to the current medical and social support systems available for people with AIDS and then screens "Fabian's Story." The documentary depicts the final days of Fabian Bridges, a drifter who gained national attention when it was learned that he continued to work regularly as a male prostitute and practice sex without contraception though he knew he had AIDS. After the film, the panel discusses the following topics: Bridges as victim of the complete breakdown of social and medical services; media exploitation of the case; the limitations of social enforcement; the concept of quarantine for people with AIDS; the specific known ways in which HIV can be transmitted; AIDS in women and babies; AIDS in drug users; the case of Central Africa, where most AIDS cases involve heterosexuals; what one should do to prevent the disease; where to go to be tested and what happens during a testing session; the critical importance of counselling before and after testing; lack of education among public health officials; anonymous vs. confidential testing; the extent to which the government should be involved in testing; the importance of sex and drug education in schools; the free distribution of condoms in schools and needles to addicts; and the need for government leadership, policy and funding.
Acquisition and cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
