NORTHERN EXPOSURE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere of the summer run of this comedy/drama series about the colorful inhabitants of Cicely, a rural Alaskan town where native New Yorker Joel Fleischman establishes his first medical practice. In the premiere, Joel has finished medical school, and is on his way to Anchorage, Alaska. He is resigned to working in a hospital there for the next four years to fulfill his obligation to the state of Alaska for granting him a medical school scholarship. Joel is prepared to live in the urban center of Anchorage, but upon his arrival he learns that the hospital there does not need him and that he has been reassigned to the small town of Cicely, "the Riviera of Alaska." Unaccustomed to living in a tiny community surrounded by wilderness, Joel is determined to return home, and searches for a loophole in his scholarship contract. But he finds that it won't be as easy to leave as he thought. Meanwhile, he is confronted with a run-down waiting room full of patients, and meets the somewhat eccentric townspeople: the ex-astronaut Maurice; the town bartender Holling; and a pilot named Maggie, his landlady, whom he manages to insult in his frustration to leave town.
