BBC 2 SERIAL, THE: LATE CALL {PART 2 OF 4} (TV)
Summary
Part two of this four-part adaptation of Angus Wilson's 1964 novel about an elderly couple's puzzlement over their son's middle-class lifestyle and the growing separation between generations.
As the episode opens, Sylvia listens as Arthur bemoans the travails of living in Harold's house. When Harold returns from work, Sylvia begs him to let her help out with domestic chores, and finally wins her case. The next morning, however, Harold changes his mind about household duties during a family dinner, leaving all at the table upset.
At Christmas, Harold suggests that the entire family dress in formal attire and attend a neighbor's party. However, when Sylvia falls in the snow, she and a disappointed Judy return to the house. Soon, Harold causes more tension when he tries to stop two moving men from delivering Sylvia and Arthur's furniture to the house. He complains that there's too much confusion as it's also the day of a party he planned to introduce Sylvia and Arthur to his colleagues. Once the soiree begins, Sylvia feels out of place, and increasingly isolated from those in her sphere.
As the episode ends, Sylvia watches from the dark as Ray and his lover, Wilf Corney, start to kiss. Sylvia interrupts and makes a hasty departure, after which Ray warns Wilf to be more careful in the future.
