I'LL FLY AWAY: I'LL FLY AWAY {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The pilot for this series of dramas about Lilly Harper, a black domestic worker; Forrest Bedford, a white district attorney; and their respective families at the inception of the black civil rights movement in the South. In the pilot, Lilly begins working for Forrest, whose wife has recently died. In an atmosphere of racial tension, Forrest is prosecuting a white bus driver charged with the deaths of several black passengers. As black townspeople carefully monitor the proceedings, Forrest comes under criticism from whites who believe that he is prosecuting overzealously. Upon the recommendation of an activist minister, Forrest refuses to accept the defendant's plea bargain, and the jury acquits. Meanwhile, when Lilly criticizes Forrest's son, Nathaniel, for his attitude toward black people, she is pleasantly surprised when Forrest does not fire or even reprimand her. Other highlights include Lilly's attempt to explain segregated buses to Forrest's youngest son, John Morgan, and the town's first sit-in. Commercials deleted.
