WHISTLING WIZARD, THE {VELVET FROG} (TV)

Summary

The first of two programs on this tape. One in this children's series starring Bil Baird's marionettes. Flannel Mouse opens the show by discussing spring planting season before welcoming guest singer Velvet Frog. Velvet sings "Sailing on the Henry Clay." Then, accompanied by Charlemane the lion, Flannel reads from the book about "The Land of Beyond," where young J.P. has been magically transported, making friends with Heathcliff the horse, Thimble the elf, and Dooley the Whistling Wizard. In this chapter, J.P.'s whistling on Dooley's magic flute has caused the wizard's house to rotate 180 degrees, leading J.P. to believe that being a wizard is a "cinch." J.P. is unaware that his flute-playing has turned Thimble into an actual thimble and has made Dooley invisible. Once realizing what he's done, J.P. can't stop sobbing. The invisible Dooley confronts J.P., comforting him on his foul-up and telling him how the mess might get straightened out. When that game plan only helps Thimble return to normal, J.P. and Heathcliff returns to the wizard's house to find a magic book that might contain the answer for Dooley. J.P. can't find the book, but he plays one of Dooley's songs on the flute when he thinks it might reverse the magic. However, the flute-playing accidentally makes P.J. and Heathcliff miniscule. While small, Heathcliff meets Hickory and Dickory, two mice that he used to antagonize when he was larger. The chapter ends as the mice take their revenge on Heathcliff. Flannel then closes the book for the week. Afterward, Charlemane announces some contest winners of those who've sent their drawings to the show.
