Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Held at the Museum in New York, and moderated by television curator Ron Simon, this seminar examines "American Playhouse," a dramatic anthology series. Panelists include the creator David Davis, executive producer Lindsay Law, developer Lynn Holst, and writer/filmmakers Michael Genet, Terence McNally, and Jan Oxenberg. Davis opens by discussing how he coordinated the emergence of "American Playhouse" on public television. Law talks about basing the series out of New York, "American Playhouse" as a writers' medium, and why the series doesn't believe in pitch meetings. Holst details working with writers and how projects originate. Genet discusses his transition from actor to writer. Oxenberg discusses writing the script for "Thank You and Goodnight." McNally talks about crossing over from playwriting to television. Questions from the audience then lead to an examination of the following topics: adapting a book into a screenplay; adapting a real-life story into a screenplay; the evolution of "American Playhouse" from more "stage-like" to more "screen-like"; money concerns on the series; and desire for future programs.
