SUNDAY SPECTACULAR, THE: THE BACHELOR (TV)
Summary
One in this series of special presentations. This live original musical production opens with cast members Hal March, Jayne Mansfield, Julie Wilson, Georgann Johnson, and Carol Haney singing "This Could Be the Start of Something Big." Featuring music and lyrics by Steve Allen (with additional songs by Ervin Drake), "The Bachelor" concerns the romantic complications in the life of a thirty-seven-year-old Madison Avenue advertising executive who is dating three women at once. Adman Larry Blaine has a successful career, a friendship with his faithful secretary, Marion, and is perfectly happy juggling three relationships -- one with Robin, the quintessential dumb blonde; one with Leslie, a smart, feisty executive; and one with Francesca, who is beautiful, rich, and spoiled. When Larry's secretary decides to teach him a lesson about deceiving people, the three women end up meeting one another at a restaurant where each has a date with Larry. The angry threesome give him an ultimatum, and Larry is forced to choose among them. To help make up his mind, he imagines what it would be like to be married to each of them, but recoils from each of the women's faults -- Robin's stupidity, Leslie's competitiveness, and Francesca's expensive tastes. Instead, he dreams about the ideal woman, a good companion who is both attractive and exciting -- like Marion. Includes the following songs: "This Could Be the Start of Something Big," "Slave Girl," "The Girl in the Grey Flannel Suit," "The Natives Are Restless Tonight," "I'm Simply Starved," "Rogue Male," "Three Cheers and a Tiger," "One Man Woman," "Impossible," "Little Black Book," and a fantasy dance number with Carol Haney, Peter Gennaro, and Frank Derbas. Includes commercials and promos. (This is a black-and-white copy of a color telecast.)
