Summary

Continued from T:29757. Tape two of two. Segments from one in this series of early morning programs, featuring interviews, special features, and news. In the first segment, anchored by Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric, "Today" receives happy fortieth anniversary greetings from Johnny Carson, while Gumbel receives tenth anniversary greetings from Steve Friedman, former executive producer of "Today"; Tom Brokaw, Gumbel's predecessor on "Today"; and show contributors Joe Garagiola and Gene Shalit. In-studio guest Jane Pauley then reminisces about her days of co-anchoring with Gumbel, with Couric later offering her thoughts about having Gumbel as a co-worker. In the second segment, Gumbel, Couric, and Williard Scott hang with Casey the chimpanzee. In the third segment, live from Havana, Cuba, Gumbel speaks with Cuba's Deputy Foreign Minister Ramon Sanchez-Parodi on such topics as: why the Cuban government allowed "Today" to broadcast there; common misconceptions of Cuba; why Cuba doesn't have freedom of speech or press; and assertions that Cuba was in some way responsible for John F. Kennedy's assassination. In the fourth segment, Couric speaks with undeclared presidential candidate Ross Perot on such topics as: the selection of Al Gore as Bill Clinton's presidential running mate; the Clinton campaign not seeing him as a viable candidate; who he might select as a running mate; gossip surrounding his campaign; his admiration for Paul Tsongas; his polling numbers; the risk of being ahead in the polls; negative ratings; litigation in his life; if he will go to great lengths to defeat competitors; his solutions for solving the budget deficit; internal trouble within his campaign; what he will be doing when the Democrats are nominating Clinton; the low profile he has been keeping; and when he will officially announce his candidacy. In the fifth segment, Couric speaks with Anita Hill, the woman who accused supreme court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexually harassing her, on such topics as: whether she was surprised that Thomas was confirmed despite her testimony; public opinion in the case; having to defend her actions and the time frame for her revelations; and inspiring women to run for office. In the sixth segment, Couric speaks with President George H.W. Bush -- as First Lady Barbara Bush stands by -- on such topics as: how early everyone wakes up in the White House; the upcoming presidential debates; the different styles of debates; thoughts on Perot; questions about Clinton's character and his demonstrating efforts during the Vietnam War; having to send youths into battle; how much he knew about funds going to Contra forces in the Iran-Contra scandal; whether FBI Director William Sessions is being investigated by the Justice Department; what he expects in the upcoming vice presidential debates; Dan Quayle being "pounded" by the press for having joined the National Guard; and his analysis of the journalism profession. In the seventh segment, during Today's week of reporting live from Africa, Gumbel introduces a taped segment in which he visits the Kariba Dam, built in the Zambezi river basin between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and addresses its impact on the local eco-system and tourism. In the eighth segment, live from Victoria Falls in Africa on November 19, 1992, Gumbel briefly looks at "the continent of contradictions." Includes commercials.
