MYSTERY!: THE CASEBOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY (TV)
Summary
One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces this Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle which is one of many in which Holmes and Dr. Watson become involved in a case that leads them to the countryside. In this program, a young man, James McCarthy, is accused of murdering his father after having a loud quarrel with him. Holmes is hired by a young lady named Alice Turner to clear James of all charges. Alice is in love with James and does not wish to see him locked up for a crime he did not commit. Holmes learns from James that he had been arguing with his father over Alice. His father wanted him to marry her, but James could not marry Alice for reasons he did not divulge to his father. Holmes also learns that Alice's father, who is extremely ill, was opposed to a marriage between Alice and James. Holmes and Watson visit the scene of the crime, and from the footprints in the sand, Holmes manages to figure out that the murderer smoked cigars from India and walked with a limp. Then, Alice's father pays Holmes a visit and tells him an astonishing story that he vows never to repeat to another soul unless absolutely necessary.
