MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: WRITING FOR TELEVISION: THE COLLABORATIVE EFFORT: EYE TO EYE WITH CONNIE CHUNG {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Museum curator Ron Simon moderates this seminar which concentrates on the newsmagazine program, "Eye to Eye with Connie Chung." The panel consists of the show's executive producer, Andrew Heyward; correspondent, Bernard Goldberg; senior producer, Susan Zirinsky; and writer, Jane Gelman. In addition to Simon's questions, the panelists present clips of their work and respond to audience queries. Highlights include: Heyward explains the need for current newsmagazines to balance journalistic merit with public appetite; Goldberg contends that in television, writing is far less important then a good story; Zirinsky addresses the incredibly tough competition that a newsmagazine faces and how original story ideas are the key to staying ahead of the competition; Gelman explains how she tailors her style for a particular anchor; Heyward maintains that the aim of a newsmagazine should be fairness rather than balance; a journalist from Italy in the audience questions the panel about the relationship between producer and correspondent in the U.S.; Goldberg asserts that some reporters become lazy about their work as they grow successful; Heyward analyzes the distinction between television newsmagazines and tabloid magazines; Zirinsky explains why newsmagazines should never pay for a story or source; and Goldberg contends that there are almost no original stories on television newsmagazines.
Clips include: Goldberg's report on Antioch College's code governing rules of sexual conduct; famed photographer Judy Olausen using her mother as a subject for photos such as "Mother as Road Kill"; an example of the show's introduction; and several different brief leads which Gelman wrote for Connie Chung.
