READING RAINBOW: STORYBOOK SPECIAL: THE LEGEND OF THE INDIAN PAINTBRUSH (TV)
Summary
One in this series of educational children's programs that encourages children to read, hosted by LeVar Burton. In this program, Burton introduces a reading of the book, "The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush," which is followed by visits with Native Amercian families at the Taos Pueblo in Taos, New Mexico. "The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush" tells the story of a young boy named Little Gopher who, though not as physically gifted as the other children, is able to create beauty through a paintbrush and his dream visions. Before and after the reading, Pueblo Indians (or "Red Willow" people), including the Arquero, Naranjo and Concha families, provide the viewer with the opportunity to explore the culture and traditions of their people, displaying their pottery and paintings, and the songs, dances and garb of the indigenous, northern New Mexico tribe. The program concludes with book reviews by children. The books reviewed are "Rainbow Crow" (retold by Nancy Van Laan), "Indians of the Americas" (from the New True Book Series) and "The Mud Pony" (retold by Caron Lee Cohen).
