48 HOURS {FORTY-EIGHT HOURS}: OKLAHOMA FEDERAL BUILDING BOMBING (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news documentary programs, hosted by Dan Rather, which focus on a specific topic for forty-eight hours. In this edition, the correspondents examine the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. During the program, the reporters talk to the families of the bombing victims; watch as doctors attempt to save the life of Brandy, a fifteen-year-old girl who was buried in rubble for fifteen hours; listen to doctors and rescue workers recount the events surrounding the bombing; relate information about the investigation into the bombing; talk with terrorist specialists about who they think might be responsible; and recall the events of the bombing of the World Trade Center through interviews with survivors. First, Erin Moriarty reports from the hospital where doctors work to save the lives of the youngest victims of the bombing. Included in this segment is footage of Brandy being brought into the hospital after having been buried for fifteen hours. After this footage is shown, surgeon Rick Nelson fights back tears as he talks about rescue efforts and Brandy's condition. Next, footage shows rescue workers digging for survivors inside the Federal Building. The next segment, "The Longest Wait: Part I," focuses on the families of missing people who wait at command centers for news about their loved ones and watch news footage of survivors, hoping that they will spot their wives and mothers. Next, Scott Pelley reports on the progress of the investigation into the bombing and the difficulties of searching for survivors in the wreckage. In "The Longest Wait: Part II," one of the families waiting for news of a relative begins to lose hope and eventually goes home. Next, Susan Spencer reports on the search for answers as she speaks with terrorism experts who speculate about who might be responsible for the explosion. Included in this segment is footage of the Pan Am flight 103 crash in Scotland and the World Trade Center bombing. After this, national security correspondent David Martin reports on a man picked up in London who has been brought back to the United States for questioning. Included in this section is footage of President Bill Clinton suggesting that the United States will retaliate against the guilty party. In the final segment, Harold Dow looks back at the World Trade Center bombing as he talks to survivors of that explosion about their feelings with regards to the bombing of the Federal Building, the bonds that were created during the crisis, and how the explosion changed their outlook on the world and on their lives. At the end of the program, various news clips are shown, including President Clinton talking to the children across the United States. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned.
