Summary
One in this series in which host William Friday, the president of the University of North Carolina, interviews successful people who reside in or hail from North Carolina. In this edition, Friday talks with Dean Smith, the head coach of the University of North Carolina basketball team. Topics discussed, among others, include: all the championships he's won with the teams he's put on the floor; the struggles he endured during his first two years of coaching; his parents and growing up in Kansas; his days of playing in college and winning the National Championship as a student athlete; how he was influenced by his coach in college; becoming a head coach at the age of thirty; how the game has changed so much and what may lie ahead for it; the concerns over the image of the game and how it effects the kids who watch and play; the summer basketball camps which claim to produce players who have made it to the professional level; his most famous team with starters James Worthy, Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Jimmy Black, and Matt Daugherty; the former players of his who are in coaching or in the pros; setting an example for other schools to produce winning teams without breaking NCAA rules; the graduation rate for his players being an astounding ninety-seven percent; changes he'd like to see in college administrations; his greatest thrill in coaching.
