WALL STREET WEEK {WALL $TREET WEEK} WITH LOUIS RUKEYSER {MONTREAL STOCK EXCHANGE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of stock market and financial analysis programs hosted by Louis Rukeyser. This edition is telecast from the Montreal Exchange (Bourse de MontrŽal), and focuses on Canada's financial outlook in light of the upcoming separatism referendum, in which the citizens of Quebec will vote whether to secede from the nation. Rukeyser makes some opening remarks about the antagonism between French primary speakers and "anglophones" in Canada, and comments on the convoluted nature of the separatism referendum and its effect on the Canadian dollar. He then presents the Dow Jones Industrial Average for the week of September 4-8, and the broader market indexes. In the first of two remote segments narrated by Rukeyser, Canada's old and future economies are examined: loggers are seen at work in the Canadian forest and then employees are shown assembling aircraft in the Bombardier plant near Montreal. The second segment features a visit to the home of a typical middle-class Canadian family struggling to make ends meet because of the country's high taxes, and a brief look at the Canadian health care system in action, as the mother takes her three children for a free routine physical. Next Rukeyser introduces three guests, all residents of Canada: Philippe Girard, first vice president, T.A.L. Investment Counsel; Frank L. Mersch, vice president/Equities, Altamira Management; and Anthony Gage, president and C.E.O., Phillips Hager & North. The panelists discuss the following topics, among others: the effects of the sovereignty issue on the Canadian economy; the problems behind Canada's ailing economy; opportunities in the Canadian bond market for American investors; the outlook for Quebec's economy; investments in the Canadian market they favor now; the nation's competitive mining sector; Canadian interest rates; the gold market; forecasts for the Canadian dollar, commodities, and oil prices; and Canada as a "late-cycle market."
