NIKE PRESENTS: A PASSION TO PLAY {DOROTHY HAMILL, NANCY KERRIGAN, KRISTI YAMAGUCHI} (TV)

Summary

This special program pays tribute to three champion figure skaters -- Dorothy Hamill, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Nancy Kerrigan. Hosted by Donna de Varona, this program explores the professional and personal lives of three skaters, with comments from family members and colleagues. In the first segment, Hamill discusses the following topics: coming home to Connecticut and being treated like royalty after her gold medal performance in the 1976 Olympic games at nineteen years old; whether she has felt trapped by the image she created twenty years ago; her fear of performing as a child; the impact of the constant attention; her reaction to her first divorce and then the untimely death of her ex-husband; why owning the Ice Capades was a horrible experience; whether she pushed her daughter into ice skating or stayed in the background; how she handled the break-up of her second marriage; and her return to figure skating. In the second segment, profiling Kristi Yamaguchi, former skating champion Dick Button, choreographer Sandra Bezic and sports agent Barry Frank comment on the qualities that make her a superstar. Yamaguchi discusses the following topics, among others: her awareness that competition would be her salvation; her decision to solely concentrate on singles competition after years of doubles with the same partner; the reason endorsement offers didn't accompany her rise to the top; her decision to turn professional but remain competitive; whether her busy touring schedule has affected her social life; and the pro tour schedule compared to the amateur schedule.

In the last segment, Nancy Kerrigan discusses the following topics, among others: the way bizarre events with skater Tonya Harding in 1994 almost ended her career; how the events became worldwide news and thrust skating into the spotlight; the overwhelming nature of the situation and her thrilling performance in the 1994 Olympic games; and her favorite sport as a child. Her parents, Dan and Brenda Kerrigan, comment on how she became interested in figure skating, and designer Vera Wang comments on the dresses she made for Kerrigan for the Olympics. Kerrigan explains why she was criticized for showing her emotions on and off the ice, and how she has learned to be a celebrity. Her agent and husband comments on whether he was concerned about the image of an agent marrying his client, and his impressions of her professional and personal life in the future. Includes commercials, promos, and a public service announcement. Commercials include Picabo Street, Mia Hamm, and Gabrielle Reese for Nike athletic apparel. This program is closed-captioned.
