PARTY OF FIVE: THANKSGIVING (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about five siblings in San Francisco who attempt to raise themselves and cope with life's daily dilemmas after their parents die in a car accident. In this episode, Thanksgiving is upon the Salingers, but they don't feel like celebrating without their parents. Adding to their grief, their lawyer informs them that Walter Alcott, the drunk driver who killed their parents, has been paroled and wants to meet them. The siblings have mixed emotions about meeting Alcott and feel they should not give him the satisfaction of apologizing; Claudia, however, has never seen Alcott and wants to know more about him. At the bookstore Alcott runs, Claudia introduces herself but says nothing more, and Bailey is outraged that she violated their agreement. Julia answers the door to find Alcott's daughter, Annie, and reluctantly invites her in to talk. Upon learning this, Bailey becomes even more outraged, but nonetheless goes to visit Alcott, revealing his stubborn and unforgiving nature. The following events also occur: Julia visits Alcott hoping to forgive him, but cannot bring herself to do so; Charlie, who is most visibly distraught over Alcott's release, refuses to visit him, though Julia suggests he do so; and, finally giving in to the pressure, Charlie makes a revelation to Alcott that places responsibility for his parents' death on his own shoulders. Commercials deleted.
(For its treatment of family relations, this episode received the Humanitas Award.) Cataloging of this program was made possible by Gordon Lemke and Brian Rogers, 1996.
