PRIDE AND PREJUDICE {PART 4 OF 6} (TV)

Summary

Part four in this six-part miniseries, based on Jane Austen's classic 1813 novel about divisiveness amongst the classes in 19th century England and the love between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. The program begins with Mr. Darcy distraught over Lizzy having shot down his proposal. Yet, Lizzy is distressed, too. Mr. Darcy returns to Lady Catherine's, penning a letter to Lizzy in which he defends himself against George's charges, claiming them to be false. Mr. Darcy recalls how, after his father died, George received 3,000 pounds and became a wastrel. Upon squandering the money, George returned the previous summer to romance and attempt to elope with the fifteen-year-old Georgiana to get her inheritance. Mr. Darcy interceded and broke them up, raising George's ire and starting a quest for revenge. Back in the present, Mr. Darcy is exhausted from his recollections. The next morning, while Lizzy is on a walk, Mr. Darcy catches up to her and presents his letter. After reading it, Lizzy has to reconsider her opinions on both him and George. She is nevertheless furious that Mr. Darcy claims to have broken up Charles and Jane due to his belief that Jane didn't truly have feelings of love for his friend. Mr. Darcy also criticizes the improper Bennet family.

Eventually, Lizzy and Maria head for home. Lizzy is excitedly greeted at an inn along the way by Lydia and Kitty, who present her with a feast as she tells them of her stay in Kent. There, Lizzy learns from Lydia that George is no longer marrying Mary following her move to Liverpool. Once arriving at Longbourn, Lizzy tells Jane about Mr. Darcy's proposal and what he disclosed about George. The next day, Lizzy notices that Jane is unhappy. She reveals that she still prefers Charles to any man she has ever met. Later, Lizzy discusses with her mother how Charles will never return to Netherfield and will not one day marry Jane. Then, Mrs. Forster invites Lydia to Brighton, where the regiment will be stationed for the summer. Lizzy tells her father that he better keep track of Lydia because her flirtatious ways are soon to embarrass the entire Bennet clan. Before Lydia leaves, Lizzy tells George how her opinion of Mr. Darcy has now changed. Kitty cries as Lydia departs, wanting to go with her. Soon, the Gardiners arrive to take Lizzie on vacation with them to Derbyshire. Her aunt and uncle then convince Lizzy to tour nearby Pemberley with them, having heard that Mr. Darcy is not currently at home. Lizzy is impressed with Mr. Darcy's estate, and the Gardiners think it a pity that such a prideful man should own the place. Walking through the house, Lizzy learns from Mr. Darcy's doting housekeeper that he is to return the next day with a large party, including Georgiana.

Meanwhile, Mr. Darcy has actually returned a day early and is taking a swim in the lake on the grounds. Wandering on the lawn, Lizzy is shocked to see the sopping wet man, and embarrassed that Mr. Darcy caught her on his estate. Lizzy tries to flee but Mr. Darcy catches up with her and the Gardiners, acting quite friendly and noting that Charles will be joining him the next day. Later, even Lizzy must admit to her aunt that Mr. Darcy has seemingly "transformed himself." As Lizzy leaves Pemberley, Mr. Darcy tells her that he hopes that they shall see each other soon.
