1997 WORLD FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS (TV)

Summary

This special presentation features dance teams and figure skaters competing for world championship titles in Switzerland. Dick Button and Terry Gannon are the commentators for the competitions. First, profiles of Americans Tara Lipinski, Michelle Kwan, and Nicole Bobek are shown. Then, the final segment of the free dance section of the dance competitions is shown. This part includes the following performances: Elizabeth Punsalan and Jerod Swallow, four-time U.S. Champions who are currently in sixth place, skate to segments of "Perhaps, Perhaps," "La Macarena," and "Suavito" and receive technical marks ranging from 5.5 to 5.6 and presentation marks ranging from 5.6 to 5.8; the French team Sophie Moniotte and Pascal Lavanchy, 1995 World Bronze Medalists who are currently in fourth place, skate to segments of "Le Sifflet" and "Les Deux Guitares" and receive technical marks ranging from 5.6 to 5.8 and presentation marks ranging from 5.7 to 5.8; the Russian team Angelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsiannikov, 1996 World Silver Medalists who are currently in second place, skate to "Masquerade Waltz" and receive technical marks ranging from 5.7 to 5.9 and presentation marks ranging from 5.8 to 5.9; Oksana Grishuk and Evgeny Platov, the current Russian champions and three-time World champions who are currently in first place, skate to "Arabian Passion" and "A Cool Wind Is Blowing" and receive technical marks ranging from 5.6 to 5.9 and presentation marks ranging from 5.9 to 6.0; and Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz, Canadian champions and 1996 World Bronze Medalists who are currently in third place, skate to segments of "High Society Overture, "Willow Weep for Me," and "Opus 1" and receive technical marks ranging from 5.7 to 5.9 and presentation marks ranging from 5.7 to 5.9. Also included in this section is a segment on the members of the two Russian skating teams, who explain why they can no longer be friends. After the competition, Leslie Visser talks with the American team about its performance at the games, and with the winner of the games. Next, the short program on Tara Lipinski is shown and Brent Musburger describes Tara Lipinski's rise. After this, Terry Gannon comments on the struggles of Lu Chen, the 1995 World Champion who did not even qualify for the free skate. After this, Peggy Fleming, Dick Button, and Terry Gannon discuss the upcoming event. Then, a "World Figure Skating Moment" is shown which features Elaine Zayak winning the 1982 World Title. After this, the free skate section of seven of the twelve top-placed competitors of the ladies competition is shown. This part includes the following performances: Joanne Carter, three-time Australian National champion who is currently in tenth place, skates to "Sheherazade" and receives technical marks ranging from 4.8 to 5.4 and presentation marks ranging from 4.8 to 5.4; French skater Laetitia Hubert, who is currently in seventh place, skates to a medley of "Tuxedo Junction," "Sing, Sing, Sing," and "In the Mood" and receives technical marks ranging from 5.3 to 5.6 and presentation marks ranging from 5.3 to 5.6; U.S. Bronze Medalist Nicole Bobek, who is currently in eighth place, skates to "Giselle" and receives technical marks ranging from 4.1 to 4.9 and presentation marks ranging from 4.8 to 5.3; Yulia Lavrenchuk, the Ukranian national champion who is currently in ninth place, skates to "Malaguena" and receives technical marks ranging from 4.9 to 5.3 and presentation marks ranging from 4.8 to 5.3; Julia Lautowa, the Austrian champion who is currently in eleventh place, skates to segments of "Le Kumdanchero" and "Summer Dream" and receives technical marks ranging from 5.3 to 5.6 and presentation marks ranging from 5.3 to 5.5; French skater Vanessa Gusmeroli, who is currently in second place, skates to "Great Circus Orchestra" and receives technical marks ranging from 5.3 to 5.7 and presentation marks ranging from 5.5 to 5.7. During this section, prerecorded footage of Nicole Bobek talking about the death of her coach Carlo Fassi, who died the night before she skated in the short program competition, is shown. She comments on what Fassi means to her and his last words to his wife. After her free skate, Bobek talks to Lesley Visser about her performance and her emotional response at the end of her program.

Brent Musburger comments on Tara Lipinski's performance at the nationals. Also, Lipinski discusses how she felt about the experience and having to live away from her father in order to get the best training; her mother, Pat Lipinski, comments on her daughter's need to be disciplined; and Lipinski's coach Richard Callaghan comments on what he sees in Tara. After this, the free skate section of the last five competitors of the ladies competition is shown. Dick Button and Terry Gannon are the commentators for the competitions. This part includes the following performances: Tara Lipinski, U.S. National Champion who is currently in first place, skates to music from the soundtracks of "Sense and Sensibility" and "Much Ado About Nothing" and receives technical marks ranging from 5.8 to 5.9 and presentation marks ranging from 5.6 to 5.9; Hungarian skater Krisztina Czako, who is currently in fifth place, skates to music from "The Addams Family" soundtrack and receives technical marks ranging from 5.2 to 5.5 and presentation marks ranging from 5.2 to 5.6; Maria Butyrskaya, the Russian National Champion who is currently in third place, skates to "Malaguena" and receives technical marks ranging from 5.2 to 5.6 and presentation marks ranging from 5.5 to 5.8; Michelle Kwan, U.S. Silver Medalist and the 1996 World Champion who is currently in fourth place, skates to "Taj Mahal" and receives technical marks ranging from 5.6 to 5.8 and presentation marks ranging from 5.8 to 5.9; and Irina Slutskaya, the European National Champion who is currenty in sixth place, skates to "Phantom on Ice" and receives technical marks ranging from 5.7 to 5.9 and presentation marks ranging from 5.7 to 5.9. During the program, Michelle Kwan also discusses battling fear and pressure. After the competition, Lesley Visser talks to Lipinski, who comments on being the youngest world champion ever, and Kwan, who talks about getting her confidence back and how Scott Hamilton's bout with cancer has affected her outlook on life. This is followed by the medal ceremony and a summation of the evening's events by Brent Musburger.
