SCREEN TESTS {WITH THE CAST OF "WELCOME BACK,
KOTTER"}

Summary

This tape features six screen tests for the comedy series, "Welcome Back, Kotter." From off-screen, Gabe Kaplan poses questions to the actors, who respond while in character. Five of the performers became regular cast members on the series. In the first segment, a fellow named Eddie Barbarino, played by John Travolta, struts into a classroom, issues a few insults, and answers questions about his friends and his girlfriend Maria. The next three screen tests occur on a small soundstage. In the second segment, another Eddie Barbarino, played by Robert Hegyes, makes insults and answers similar questions. Upon finishing, Hegyes states his full name and Kaplan greets him. In the third segment, Freddie "Boom-Boom" Washington, played by Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, checks out his teacher's apartment and threatens to steal stereos. Upon finishing, Hilton-Jacobs comes out of character to state his name, and Kaplan shakes his hand. In the fourth segment, Arnold Horseshack, played by Ron Palillo, admires his teacher's spacious apartment. When he finishes, Palillo shyly states his name and Kaplan greets him. In the fifth segment, a woman playing the part of Maria walks into a classroom and answers questions about her relationship with Barbarino. In the final screen test, which occurs in an enclosed room, Marcia Strassman and Gabe Kaplan portray Julie and Gabe Kotter. Julie assuages her husband's fears about teaching his scurrilous students for a second day.
