STEPHEN KING'S THE SHINING {PART 2 OF 3} (TV)
Summary
Part two in this three-part miniseries, based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, about a troubled man and his family who become caretakers of the haunted Overlook Hotel during its winter shutdown.
This part begins at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting attended by Jack. Meanwhile, Wendy takes Danny to a doctor who claims that Danny is normal. Doctor Edwards believes that Danny might simply be feeling the stress in Jack and Wendy's marriage. Back at the Overlook, Jack monitors the faulty boiler before taking a tour of the dusty basement. He finds a memory book of Horace Derwent, referencing a masked ball that took place when the Overlook was in its heyday, as well as subsequent red-letter days. Then, Jack hears some otherworldly voices, thinking they be may the same force that knocked the chairs off the dining room tables. He also wonders if a gangland murder at the Overlook led to the hotel being haunted. Later, the first snowfall of the season begins and the Torrances race outside to play.
That afternoon, while his mother naps, Danny explores the halls of the Overlook, led on by ghostly voices to room 217. Just as he is about to go in, Tony appears and tells him to heed the advice of Dick and stay out of the suite. Then, Danny goes to Stuart's office and steals a passkey to enter 217. However, just as he's about to open the door, Tony again interrupts and chases Danny down the hall. There, he watches as blood begins oozing from the emergency fire hose. A frantic Danny rushes back to his father, who is upset at Danny for going where he's not allowed. Jack wants to punish Danny for breaking the rules but restrains himself and doesn't get violent. That night, Danny tells Wendy that Jack is yet again down in the spooky cellar looking at old newspapers. Then, Danny informs his mother that Jack stopped working on his play, upsetting her. Danny further notes that Jack is not drinking, even though he thinks about having "a cold one" quite a bit. That night, Danny sees the mysterious letters "REDRUM" appear on his wall in blood, then in the frost on his window. By December 8, Jack is becoming flustered by Danny's careless treatment of belongings in the Overlook.
Later, Wendy wonders if Jack is still attracted to her as he spurns her sexual advances. She is angry at Jack, thinking that the Overlook has brought back all the bad habits he exhibited when drinking. She also confronts him over the fact that he has quit writing his play. Wendy thinks they need to figure out a way to get to Sidewinder, some twenty-three miles away, if they want to be happy again. Jack insists that his collating of all the Overlook memories will help them in the long run. The next day, Jack is walking the Overlook's grounds, going about his caretaker's chores. Then, Jack sees a mallet appear out of nowhere. Next, some topiary animals seem to awaken and menace him. He runs to the house, thinking he's had an alcoholic flashback. By December 20, more snow is predicted for the region as the Torrances prepare for Christmas. Meanwhile, Jack exhibits the first signs of madness, even hearing his dead father's voice over the C.B. radio. His father claims that Wendy and Danny have betrayed Jack and held him back. In a moment of fury, Jack takes a mallet and smashes the C.B.
At the same time, Danny is inexorably pulled to 217. The boy hears voices in the room before encountering a horrific corpse in the bathtub, the rotting remains of the woman that recently committed suicide there. Seeing that a passkey is missing, an angry Jack tries to find his son to punish him, but Wendy stops her husband from taking action. Jack and Wendy eventually find Danny, shaken up and badly bruised. Wendy automatically believes Jack has caused the damage. Then, Jack notices that his son is wet and covered in lipstick. Danny claims that the ghostly woman in 217 kissed him, then tried to strangle him. Jack and Wendy are confused by what Danny is talking about, though he explains that the hotel "wants" him because of his "shining." Jack heads to 217 to check it out, over Wendy's objections. Upon getting to the room, Jack finds makeup in the bathroom cabinet and a wet footprint on the rug. Then, he hears a noise and sprints from the room. Claiming he saw nothing, Jack returns to Danny to have "a little chat" about where he can go in the Overlook.
Wendy thinks they should leave the hotel via snowmobile but Jack finds the notion ridiculous. The next day, Jack goes to the equipment shed to find the snowmobile. He's stunned when observing that a mallet and note have been placed on it. The note is from "The Management," insisting that Jack not desert his post. Jack then has a vision of the ghost of Horace Derwent telling him to "seize your destiny." Jack returns, telling Wendy to get her coat and come outside with him. There, he shows her the destroyed snowmobile, just like the C.B. radio. Wendy thinks someone else must be at the Overlook, but Jack maintains that Danny is using his special powers to cause the destruction. Wendy reveals that Danny thinks the hotel is channeling his special power to cut off all the family's means of escape. On December 29, Danny plays in the snow as Wendy watches from the Overlook's second floor. A noise then lures her into Stuart's office, after which the doors slam shut and lock her inside. She screams for Jack, knowing that Danny is in trouble. Sure enough, the topiary animals silently advance on the unsuspecting youngster. Includes commercials.
