MOBY DICK {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
Part one of two. A special two-part made-for-television movie, based on the classic novel by Herman Melville, which chronicles the vengeful Captain Ahab's quest to kill the white whale that devoured his leg during a previous voyage. As part one begins, a young man, known as Ishmael, signs up as a seaman on a whaling vessel for the first time and befriends the foreign savage, Queequeg, an excellent, experienced harpooner. Before shipping out, they are warned by an old man that all but one on their ship, the Pequod, will perish on the voyage, and they hear a telling sermon by Father Mapple in which he uses Jonah and the whale as a parable for man's inability to escape from God. After being indoctrinated into the idiosyncrasies and brutality of life aboard ship by mates Stubb and Flask, Ishmael meets Captain Ahab, who offers a sixteen-ounce gold piece as reward to anyone who captures his nemesis, Moby Dick. Against the advice of first mate Mr. Starbuck, Ahab extracts pledges from the crew to make the death of Moby Dick the object of their trip. After successfully harpooning the first whale they sight during their voyage, the crew of the Pequod comes in contact with a passing British vessel whose captain, Mr. Boomer, gives Ahab news of the great white whale. Shortly after setting off in pursuit, things take a turn for the worse as the crew's morale disintegrates and one of the seamen, Perth, falls to his death from his post as lookout. As part one closes, Ishmael spots a huge white whale in the distance. Commercials deleted. Continues with T:52721.
