Summary
One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the backroads of America. In the first segment, Kuralt travels to Newport, Oregon, where he meets Thomas McAdams, a twenty-six-year veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. Over the years, McAdams has gone on hundreds of successful rescue missions, for which has received numerous awards and medals. In Roanoke, North Carolina, Kuralt remembers the first English colonists of 1587, who mysteriously disappeared without leaving a trace within three years of settling there. Next, Kuralt goes to Southern California, where an old-fashioned mule train is being employed to haul huge loads of building materials through the otherwise impassable mountains to repair a dam. At Florida State University, the students participate in an unusual extra-curricular activity -- a student circus. Every year, the class learns about juggling, tightrope-walking, trapeze acrobatics, and other acts, culminating in a real circus show where they perform all that they have learned. In the last segment, Kuralt takes a quick trip to see the fall colors in New England. He stops to talk to a New Hampshire man about the beauty of the season, and watches a group of children play in the piles of leaves. ("On the Road with Charles Kuralt" consists of excerpts from Charles Kuralt's segments on the CBS Evening News, beginning in 1967. In the 1970s the show was aired in four special broadcasts, and in 1983 it was developed into a regular ten-week summer series. This program represents one of a series that was reworked for and aired on the Travel Channel in 1993.)
