ON THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT {BALLOONS; OYSTERING; HORN COLLECTOR; HOME ON THE RANGE; NEW HAMPSHIRE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the backroads of America. In the first segment, Kuralt visits a Medford man who began as a balloon peddler in 1928, and whose sons have created a nationwide balloon vending business. Next, Kuralt takes a trip to the Chesapeake Bay aboard one of the last manually run oyster boats still in operation. In St. Louis, Missouri, a high school humanities teacher displays his wide and wild collection of horns of dubious origins, such as the "Serpentine Pedalphone" and the "Byzantine Beggar's Horn." In Dallas, Texas, Kuralt meets the eighty-year-old composer of "Home on the Range," who performs the song for the show. Finally, Kuralt travels to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he recounts the events of 1774 that led to what is considered the first victory of the American Revolution.

("On the Road with Charles Kuralt" consists of excerpts from Charles Kuralt's segments on the CBS Evening News, beginning in 1967. In the 1970's the show was aired in four special broadcasts, and in 1983 it was developed into a regular ten-week summer series. This program represents one of a series that was reworked for and aired on the Travel Channel in 1993.)

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the CBS Foundation, 1998.
