Summary
One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the backroads of America. In the first segment, Kuralt reflects on the multicultural history of Alaska, focusing on the symbolism of the eagle in both the Russian and Native Alaskan heritages. Next, Kuralt spends some time with Levore Taylor, a master of sheep-shearing who has spent the past fifty-seven years perfecting his craft. Kuralt then goes to a Livermore, California, fire department to see the handmade lightbulb that has been burning there virtually non-stop for seventy-one years. The next segment tells the story of Kansas temperance crusader, Carry Nation. Mrs. Nation was notorious for tearing up bars and saloons with her hatchet, but was also known for her charitable work with women and children. Finally, Kuralt goes to see Tommy Scott's "Old Time Medicine Show," that has been traveling to small towns throughout North America for forty-three years, sharing traditional American songs, juggling, and magic acts. ("On the Road with Charles Kuralt" consists of excerpts from Charles Kuralt's segments on the CBS Evening News, beginning in 1967. In the 1970s the show was aired in four special broadcasts, and in 1983 it was developed into a regular ten-week summer series. This program represents one of a series that was reworked for and aired on the Travel Channel in 1993.)
