LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIEN: FIFTH ANNIVERSARY SHOW (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk shows hosted by Conan O'Brien. In this special prime-time program, O'Brien celebrates his fifth anniversary on the air. This program begins with O'Brien standing on a pier at the Hudson River, preparing to drop videotapes of the show's best moments deep into the river for safekeeping. Upon doing so, O'Brien realizes what the tapes mean to him and dives in after them. Topics from his monologue include: his message for viewers who have never seen him before; important current events since the show began; his thankfulness for colleagues like Andy Richter and Max Weinberg; and a demonstration of his fondness for Richter with clips profiling their friendly relationship. Then, Tony Randall and Pimpbot 5000 introduce clips from O'Brien's hundreds of interviews, featuring such guests as David Letterman, William Shatner, Michael Richards, Ed McMahon, Rebecca Romjin Stamos, Fran Drescher, Chris Farley, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Norm MacDonald, Martha Stewart, Fabio, and Jackie Chan. Other highlights include the following: O'Brien receives a phone call from a person claiming to be his secret lover -- and the caller is revealed to be Adam Sandler; Chris Rock and Lisa Kudrow recall their "Favorite Conan Moments"; O'Brien and Richter talk about favorite cable channels such as the Punch in the Face channel featuring Larry King, and the Kids' Action Hero channel with the "Embryonic Rockabilly Polka-Dotted Fighter Pilots"; and clips of the show's classic musical performances are featured. Finally, Tom Arnold and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog introduce clips from O'Brien and Richter's adventures, including the following: O'Brien in Amsterdam; Richter backstage at the Miss America Pageant; O'Brien in the New York Yankees locker room with Billy Crystal; Richter on the Weather Channel; O'Brien in Times Square, at truck driving school, and learning how to dance to hip-hop music; Richter at Woodstock; and O'Brien in a Houston bus terminal. The program concludes as the host and his sidekick receive a visit from President Bill Clinton on the television monitor. Commercials deleted.
