FREAKS AND GEEKS: THE LITTLE THINGS (TV)

Summary

One in this series about two distinct groups of high schoolers in 1980 Michigan -- the Freaks, hoodish outcasts-by-choice who love heavy metal, cars, and defying authority; and the Geeks, physically and socially underdeveloped kids who revel in science fiction and impersonations of their comedy idols. This episode is based around the different reactions that students have to the news that Vice President George H.W. Bush has announced that he will be visiting McKinley High School. While Nick is simply confused by this news ("George Bush?," he wonders aloud. "The porn star?"), Lindsay is moved to make her political affiliations known. "I'm a Democrat!," she screams at her father. Party loyalties aside, guidance counselor Jeff Rosso thinks Lindsay would be the perfect person to ask the lead-off question at the question-and-answer segment of the visit. Lindsay initially rejects the offer but quickly reconsiders when she realizes the significance of the opportunity. Sam is too distracted by his problems with Cindy Sanders to concentrate on Bush's visit, although Cindy herself (as president of the Young Republicans Club) has been tapped to introduce the vice president to the students. Sam is starting to wonder whether he may like Cindy for the wrong reasons; when he takes her to see "The Jerk" at a local discount movie theater, she doesn't find the film funny. Ken also finds himself in the middle of relationship troubles when his new girlfriend Amy makes a shocking confession that causes him to reconsider his entire world view. Lindsay finds out that the questions she has prepared to ask the Vice President have been deemed too subversive by his staff, and they assign her a pre-written question about his favorite place to eat when he is in town. Sam makes up his mind that he's going to break up with Cindy, despite loud advice on all sides telling him that he is making a horrible mistake. Ken finds that his difficulties with Amy and her revelatory announcement are creating a significant rift between him and his friends. Commercials deleted.
