WARS AND IMAGES: GRINGO {PART 1 OF 4} {ENGLISH LANGUAGE VERSION} (TV)

Summary

Part one in this four-part documentary series on the history of the relationship between Mexico and the United States as portrayed through published images. In this episode, narrator Christopher Smith looks at the 1846-1848 Mexican-American War and the use of lithographs, illustrations, oil paintings, postcards, and daguerreotypes as tools for both informing and inciting the public. He begins with the American expansion into Texas, Sam Houston's rebellion against General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in 1835, and the portrayal of the battle of the Alamo in both still and moving pictures. Smith then follows the United States' declaration of war against Mexico after the 1845 annexation of Texas. Through historical narration, personal accounts, and numerous images, Smith talks about the siege of Monterey; the death of Lieutenant Henry Clay at the battle of Buena Vista; the growth in popularity of the daguerreotype, "the mirror with memory"; the attack on Veracruz; Santa Anna's loss at the battle for Cerro Gordo; General Winfield Scott's displeasure with the atrocities committed by American volunteer soldiers; Mexican publisher Abraham Lopez's calendar chronicling Santa Anna's mistakes and miscalculations; and the defeat of Mexico in September of 1847. Continues with T:61864.
