SESAME STREET: THE FIREFIGHTER SHOW {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of educational children's programs that teaches numbers and the alphabet, along with social and cultural concepts, to pre-schoolers. Set on the fanciful urban block of Sesame Street, the series features Jim Henson's live-action Muppets, animation, short films, and a cast of adults and children. The series opened its thirty-third season almost five months after September 11 with this episode to help youngsters cope with emotions roused by the events of that day. In this episode, fire erupts in the Hooper's kitchen while Elmo and Maria dine there. Elmo is so petrified he refuses to go back in even after the fire is extinguished. A trip to the local firehouse ensues, with Elmo eventually overcoming his fears and donning an NYFD hat. Other highlights in this episode: Cookie Monster and Big Bird play a game of "what doesn't belong" which, for some reason, always seems to end with Cookie Monster getting to eat a cookie; the Monster Club teaches people how to be monsters and answers viewer mail; The Count introduces the number of the day, three; kids talk about wanting to be firefighters; Jill Scott sings "We Are All Earthlings," a song about the earth, to some exotic animals; in "Journey to Ernie," Big Bird travels around the world, from outer space to the Arctic, in search of the hidden Ernie; animals made of sand sing "Sing!"; in "Ernie's Show and Tell," a child demonstrates how to play a glockenspiel; and Rosita plays her guitar to introduces the Spanish words of the day, "si" and "no." The episode ends with a segment of Elmo's World -- a world drawn by crayons. Elmo talks about the many different kinds of "fishes" and how they behave. In addition, a Dorothy Bubble animated short discusses fish.
