BBC NEWS 24 SPECIAL REPORT {TERRORIST ATTACKS}
(TV)

Summary

This BBC News 24 offering presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, nearly six hours after the attack. The tape opens with off-the-air footage, including an interview with Shimon Peres conducted for broadcast later. The program opens with a recap of the day's earlier events with clips showing the plane collisions into the World Trade Center. In another clip, U.S. President George W. Bush is seen saying his first public words after the attack from an elementary school in Florida. BBC correspondent Steven Evans, who worked in the World Trade Center, discusses what it felt like when the first plane collided with his building and recounts his escape. Clips show the World Trade Center buildings collapsing, people running down the streets trying to escape, and the Pentagon on fire. In a clip, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell affirms his faith in "the American way." A clip from ABC News is played of anchor Peter Jennings's remarks as the buildings are seen collapsing. Clips show Vladimir Putin and Tony Blair announcing that their countries will join the U.S. in a war against terrorism. James Robbins reports on the search for Osama bin Laden, the man suspected of launching the terrorist attacks, noting that no one in the United States is quite sure where he is at the moment. Paul Beaver discusses other possible suspects and speculates on how a terrorist group could have accomplished the attacks. A clip shows Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres's expression of support for the U.S. Next, David Plesch, a security analyst, discusses the security of American airports and public buildings, which he characterizes as rather lax. Frank Gardner reports from Cairo on the jubilation going on in some areas of the Middle East; he also notes that a large majority of Arabs, especially in Egypt, are in a somber mood. Steven Evans breaks in live from New York where he reports that the Saloman Brothers building near the World Trade Center has just collapsed. Earlier reports are replayed. Jane Stanley in New York updates the information on the Saloman Brothers building collapse, noting that several other buildings have also collapsed, specifically the Marriott Hotel nearby. Don Morrison, the European editor of Time magazine, gives his reaction to the attacks as an American living in Europe. He also discusses the psyche of the United States and the country's feelings toward the rest of the world and answers questions about Americans' faith in Bush. John Simpson reports from Islamabad that the Taliban leadership of Afghanistan is denying reports that it or bin Laden was involved in the attacks. He also discusses what bin Laden might be trying to achieve if he is responsible for the attacks. In an audio clip, Bernadette Kingham, a worker at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York, talks about the volunteer spirit in New York; she notes that there is need for even more blood at hospitals. The end of the tape features several packaged recaps of earlier stories and clips with audio commentary from reporters who include John Andrew, Rachel Ellison, and Allison Holt. The tape cuts out in the middle of one of the recaps.
