THE TRAVELERS MISTAKENLY ENTER THE LITTLE LEIYIN
TEMPLE} {PT. 19 OF 25} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

The second of two programs on this tape. (Part nineteen is after part twenty on this tape.) Part nineteen of twenty-five in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese supernatural-fantasy novel, "Journey to The West," written by Wu Chengen in the mid-1500s. This adaptation follows the journey of the Tang monk Sanzang and his three pupils, detailing their adventures with monsters and gods as they travel to the Western Heaven seeking the three higher Buddhist scriptures. In this installment, Sanzang and his three pupils (Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Seng) come across a fake miniature version of the Leiyin Temple and deal with the monsters inside. Part nineteen begins as the four travelers enter a quiet forest. But they are ambushed and Sanzang is kidnapped. Sanzang wakes up to find he's surrounded by tree and plant monsters (Guzhi Gong, Shiba Gong, Fuyun Sou, and Linggongzi) who are posing as gods. The monsters try to make Sanzang feel comfortable by reciting poetry and performing beautiful dances. Once Sanzang is enjoying himself, the monsters force him to stay by proposing to marry him to a beautiful flower monster (Xinxian). Sanzang refuses but to no avail. Fortunately, Wukong comes to save him just in time. The four travelers continue with their journey, and they soon see a temple named Leiyin. Everyone, except for Wukong, thinks it's the real Leiyin Temple, so they go in to pay their respects. Once inside, a large horde of monsters led by one called Huangmei Yaowang capture Wukong in a giant cymbal and the others in a net. Zhu Bajie and Sha Shen manage to free themselves in a short while, but they can't manage to free Wukong from the cymbal. Wukong tells Bajie to bring some gods to help them, while Sha Shen goes to free Sanzang. After much work, one of the gods is able to make a very small hole in the cymbal; Wukong turns himself into a fly and comes out through the hole. Next, Wukong, Bajie, and Sha Shen fight the monsters and eventually manage to escape from them. Once out of the temple, Wukong, Bajie and Sha Shen realize they've left their baggage behind, including the special robe that was given to Sanzang by the Goddess of Mercy. Wukong goes and gets their baggage back, but in the meantime the lead monster Huangmei Yaowang captures Sanzang again. At this crucial moment, Milei Fo (Laughing Buddha) comes to help Wukong capture Huangmei Yaowang, who had once been Milei Fo's pet. Once the Laughing Buddha takes away Huangmei Yaowang, the four travelers continue with their journey to the West.
