Summary
A documentary about British stockbroker Nicholas Winton and his rescue of 669 Czechoslovakian children from the Nazis in 1939. The program includes interviews, newsreel footage, and old photographs. CBC reporter Joe Schlesinger, one of the rescued children (who are now all senior citizens), explains how the details of Winton's actions were uncovered in the late 1980s when a scrapbook with all the paperwork was discovered. The following people -- all rescued by Winton as children -- share their thoughts, feelings, and memories of the past: Karel Reisz; Kurt Stern; Hugo Marom; Cedonia Guns; Joseph Guns; Jozef Girvat; Vera Gissing; Tom Berman; Lord Alfred Dubs; Amos Ben Ron; Tom Graumann; and Tom Schrecker. Schlesinger talks about European politics in the 1930s and the events leading to the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. He explains how Winton compiled a list of refugee children who were in possible danger and needed temporary homes. According to Schlesinger, only Sweden and Britain opened their doors to these children, and Winton had to complete much paperwork to place the children and get them legally and safely out of Czechoslovakia. Several of the rescued children discuss the following issues: being saved from the Nazis; their memories of traveling to and arriving in Britain; their impressions of Britain; and their illusions regarding the fate of their parents. These survivors are shown with their current families, fifty years after the war. Winton talks about what he did, and explains that he appeared on the BBC program "That's Life" in 1988, where he was reunited with many of the children he saved.
