Using a dazzling mix of newsreels, interviews, and
dramatizations, German television director Heinrich
Breloer delves into the history of Germany's most
accomplished literary family - the Manns. In this first
of three parts, Thomas Mann's youngest daughter
Elisabeth serves as a guide as the family confronts the
excesses of the Weimar Republic and Hitler's rise to
power. Armin Mueller-Stahl stars as Thomas Mann,
author of such works as "Buddenbrooks" and "Death in
Venice" and the recipient of the Novel Prize for
Literature. (Germany; 105 minutes; Bavaria Film in
