60 MINUTES: BROADWAY MUSICAL SMILE {MARVIN HAMLISCH} {SEGMENT} (TV)
Summary
A segment from one in this series of news magazine
programs. In this segment, Diane Sawyer examines the
process of getting a musical onto a Broadway stage,
focusing specifically on Marvin Hamlisch's new
production "Smile." The story begins one year prior
with Hamlisch and cast rehearsing. Hamlisch discusses
what he has "riding" on the show as well as the
songwriting process. Next, a mock production is put on
for potential investors, including music mogul David
Geffen. After finally securing some funding, the show
hits the Baltimore stage. The segment ends at the
opening night party as Hamlisch and others wait for the
morning's first print reviews to come in, wondering if
they will make it to Broadway.
