MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: WILLIAM S. PALEY
TELEVISION FESTIVAL 2004: THE O. C. {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's annual William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors "The O.C.," this dramatic series about Orange County's Cohen and Cooper families, and the troubled teen from Chino, Ryan, who is thrust into this rarefied, wealthy community. Los Angeles Museum director and vice president Barbara Dixon moderates. Dixon opens the evening by describing "The O.C." and the critical acclaim it has received. She introduces the panelists: producer Stephanie Savage; writer and co-executive producer Allan Heinberg; director and executive producer Doug Liman; executive producer McG; creator, writer and executive producer Josh Schwartz; and cast members Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Adam Brody, Melinda Clarke, Tate Donovan, Peter Gallagher, Benjamin McKenzie, and Kelly Rowan. Schwartz introduces the episode "The Goodbye Girl" which is then screened in its entirety. After the screening, Schwartz and McG discuss the genesis of the show and how it was pitched to Fox. Schwartz further details his childhood in Rhode Island and learning about Orange County while attending the University of Southern California. Next, each cast member details how he or she came to be cast. Schwartz also adds how he drew inspiration from "The Ice Storm" in creating a work about parent/children relationships. Questions from the audience then lead to an examination of the following topics: writing and filming schedules; season two details; how music on the show is chosen; whether there are plans to bring back the characters of Ryan's mother and Anna; how one gets into the television business; whether Adam Brody will date a young girl in the audience; homosexual storylines; episode arcs; and McKenzie's stunt work on the show.

(This tape includes the "The O.C." episode "The Goodbye Girl" which is part of the Museum's collection and may be viewed separately. See "The O.C.: The Goodbye Girl" (T:80474) for summary and credits.)
