NOVA: THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE: WELCOME TO THE 11TH DIMENSION {HOUR 3 OF 3} (TV)

Summary

Continues from T:81257. Hour three of three. One in this series of science documentaries. Brian Greene hosts this three-hour, Peabody Award-winning series about string theory, a contention held by some physicists that all matter is composed of subatomic strings whose vibrations determine the nature of the universe. Greene's descriptions of the theory, the theory's development, and its potential applications are complemented by commentary from leading physicists; dramatizations of historical moments of scientific breakthrough; and live-action and animated demonstrations of the principles discussed. In this hour, the third of three, Greene explains the concept of multi-dimensionality implied by string theory; shows its potential for enabling greater comprehension of the natural world; discusses problems presented by the theory's five variations; tells the story of how Ed Witten's "M Theory" was revealed to the world's leading physicists at the University of Southern California's "Strings '95" conference; explains the concept of "branes" described by the M Theory; explains how the M Theory solved the problems that plagued string theorists; elaborates on the concept of parallel universes; and discusses cutting-edge projects by rivals Fermilab and CERN, two laboratories hoping to prove the existence of parallel universes and "supersymmetry" with giant atom-smashers. Commentary is provided by Joseph Lykken, Fermilab; David Gross, University of California Santa Barbara; Michael B. Green, University of Cambridge; Sheldon Lee Glashow, Boston University; Burt Ovrut, University of Pennsylvania; Joseph Polchinski, University of California Santa Barbara; Edward Witten, Institute of Advanced Study; Leonard Suskind, Stanford University; Nathan Seiberg, Institute of Advanced Study; Gary Horowitz, University of California Santa Barbara; Steven Weinberg, University of Texas at Austin; Nima Arkani-Hamed, Harvard University; S. James Gates, Jr., University of Maryland; Davas Dimopoulos, Stanford University; Alan Guth, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Paul Steinhardt, Princeton University; Michael Duff, University of Michigan; Maria Spiropulu, Fermilab; and Amanda Peet, University of Toronto. This program is closed-captioned.
