P.O.V. {POINT OF VIEW}: FLAG WARS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of independently produced documentaries. This Peabody Award-winning documentary looks at a Columbus, Ohio neighborhood undergoing gentrification. In a P.O.V. "Behind the Lens" segment, filmmakers Laura Poitras and Linda Goode Bryant discuss what drew them to the near east side/Olde Towne East neighborhood where longtime black residents face white gays who are buying up homes and renovating them; the tension between the groups is marked by the appearance of rainbow flags and black nationalist flags, hung from the porches and homes of the residents. The documentary proceeds, without narration, by following several neighborhood figures: Floyd and Josephine Goode, an elderly black couple who have lived in the neighborhood for many years; Nina Masseria, a lesbian real estate agent; Linda R. Mitchell, a black homeowner in obviously declining health who, unable to keep her house in good condition, finds herself constantly facing charges before Environmental Court Judge Richard C. Pfeiffer; Chief Baba Olugbala Shango Obadena, a resident who is in a protracted battle with zoning authorities over the African sign outside his house; Jim Yoder, a gay man who is struggling to renovate the home he has just purchased; and Chuck Spingola, a preacher who promulgates hate towards gays. The film shows numerous scenes of these people interacting with each other, various community residents and the media, all of which present a complex picture of what gentrification means to the people who live it. This program is closed-captioned.
