Summary

This special presents live coverage of the red carpet ceremonies leading up to the closing of the 51st San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain, accompanied by a documentary montage summarizing the highlights of the festival. Presenter Antonio Mu–oz de Mesa talks of the awards received by Spanish films "Te doy mis ojos" ("Take My Eyes") and "Los Abajo Firmantes" ("We Hereby Sign"), as well as the prize for best film awarded to the German production "Schussangst" ("Gun-Shy"). A montage clip of "Schussangst" is shown, followed by short interviews with director Dito Tsintsadze and actors Fabian Hinrichs and Lavinia Wilson. Mu–oz de Mesa introduces short clips of festival honorees and actors Luis Tosar and Laia Marull; he then recounts the prizes awarded to directors, including the Concha de Plata for Best Director to Thomas McCarthy, the prize for best new director to Bong Joon-ho, and the Premio del Publico (The People's Choice Award) to director Kim Ki-duk (clips are shown throughout from each of their movies, respectively "The Station Agent," "Memories of a Killer," and "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter . . . and Spring.") The program then cuts to a documentary montage of the festival with the following highlights (brief clips from named films are occasionally included): actors Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron promote their film "The Italian Job"; director JosŽ Luis Borau accepts the National Cinematography prize; actress Mar’a Barranco welcomes the audience of a large auditorium to the San Sebastian Festival; three prizes are awarded, the first to director Nuri Bilge Ceylan for his film "Uzak" ("Distant"), the second to Christoffer Boe for best direction of his film "Reconstruction," and the third to Alfredo Landa, for lifetime achievement in acting; the official jury of the San Sebastian film festival walks on stage, headed by jury member HŽctor Baberico; director Fernando PŽrez rides a bike around San Sebastian, discussing his movie "Suite Habana" ("Havana Suite"), inspired by the 1927 German film "Die Sinfonie der Grosstadt" ("Symphony of a Great City") by Walter Ruttman (clips are shown of both films); a montage shows international actors sharing one-line jokes in the tradition of American filmmaker Preston Sturges; director and screenwriter Joaqu’n Oristrell and actor and screenwriter Juan Diego Botto converse about the failure of the occupation of Iraq, followed by a clip of their movie "Los Abajo Firmantes" about the war; actors Asier Hormaza and Itziar Itu–o and director Patxi Barko discuss the difficulties of competing with the monolithic North American cinematic industry; actors Bobby Cannavale and Peter Dinklage and director Thomas McCarthy discuss their movie "The Station Agent"; director Claude Chabrol expresses gratitude for the audience's admiration; actress Isabelle Huppert, receiving an award for lifetime achievement in acting, speaks of the San Sebastian festival's growing formidableness and the bridge it creates between the French and Spanish; a montage shows actor Harvey Keitel walking through the city, then director Gerardo Herrero and actor Eduardo Fern‡ndez discuss their movie "El Misterio Gal’ndez" ("The Galindez File") and the conflict between the power of the state and the city; director Julio Medem speaks of the controversy surrounding his latest film, "La Pelota Vasca" ("The Basque Ball: Skin Against Stone"); a short clip of a performance by French singer Benjamin Biolay is shown; actor Luis Tosar and director Manuel Mart’n Cuenca talk about their film "La flaqueza del bolchevique" ("The Weakness of the Bolshevik"); actress Emmanuelle BŽart speaks of her positive working experience with French director Jacques Rivette in the movie "The Story of Marie and Julien"; director Achero Ma–as and actors Oscar Jaenada and Ingrid Rubio discuss their movie "Noviembre" ("November"); actors Eric Caravaca and Bruno Todeschini discuss their film "Son Frere" ("His Brother"); actor Sean Penn receives an award for lifetime achievement in acting and, after leaving the stage, is followed by actor Diego Luna, who cites Penn as one of his idols; at a cafe, Luna speaks with fellow Mexican actor Pedro Armend‡riz, Jr. about the number of films he has currently showing at the festival; director Michael Winterbottom discusses his positive experience at the festival; director Ic’ar Bolla’n and actors Luis Tosar, Laia Marull and Candela Pe–a discuss their hopes about their film "Te doy mis ojos" ("Take My Eyes"); festival director Mikel Olaciregui and actress Marisa Paredes share the reasons why they enjoy the San Sebastian film festival; actress Ludivine Sagnier, in a photo shoot on the beach, talks about her desire to meet new people at the festival; actors Eduardo Fern‡ndez, Vicenta N'Dongo, and Alex Brendemuhl discuss their impressions of the festival as it draws toward a close; jury members Hector Baberico and Silvia Munt speak of the judging process; the cast and crew of the German film "Schussangst" ("Gun-shy") pose for the paparazzi; director Peter Webber discusses his movie "Girl with a Pearl Earring"; and Robert Duvall receives an award for lifetime achievement. After the highlights, the program returns to S‡nchez Silva on the red carpet, where she interviews actress Pilar Bardem about the prizes awarded to actors. A montage of international actors spotted throughout the week (many of whom were featured in the documentary) is shown. S‡nchez Silva interviews cinematographer Eduardo Serra, wherein the two discuss the many camera shots in his movie "Girl with a Pearl Earring" that were inspired by Vemeer paintings. There is a short interview segment with screenwriter Per Fly, who won the prize for best screenplay for his movie "Arven" ("The Inheritance"), with accompanying clips from the film. S‡nchez Silva interviews members of the production team of "Te doy mis ojos," including director and screenwriter Ic’ar Bolla’n, co-screenwriter Alicia Luna and actress Candela Pe–a. S‡nchez Silva interviews San Sebastian jury member Silvia Munt about the film-judging process, then director Dito Tsintsadze, who says he was completely surprised by his award, before returning to Mu–oz de Mesa, who closes the program.
