MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: 2006 WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA {TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL {23RD}} {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors "Battlestar Galactica," a sci-fi re-imagining of the 1978 ABC show about a lost tribe of humans on a fleet of starships, led by the Battlestar Galactica, during a war with the robotic Cylons.
David Bushman (curator, The Museum of Television & Radio) offers opening remarks and welcomes executive producers/creators Ronald Moore and David Eick. who introduce the episode "Lay Down Your Burdens (Part 1)" which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see T:87790.)
After the screening, Bushman moderates the following panelists: executive producers/creators Ronald Moore and David Eick; and cast members Jamie Bamber (Lee "Apollo" Adama), Mary McDonnell (Laura Roslin), James Callis (Gaius Baltar), Katee Sackhoff (Kara "Starbuck" Thrace), Grace Park (Sharon "Boomer" Valerii / Sharon "Athena" Agathon / "Number Eight"), and Edward James Olmos (William Adama). A special video message from actress Tricia Helfer, who played "Number Six," is played in which she expresses her regret for being unable to attend the evening's panel.
The panelists then discuss such topics as: 9/11 analogies on the show; why the producers decided to "re-imagine" "Battlestar Galactica"; the influence of the film "Blade Runner" (1982) on the series; the casting process; a list of goals which Moore wrote before the series began; why Olmos doesn't typically watch television; the number of Latinos that have been in outer space-based television shows; social relevance of the show; and the numerous strong, female characters on the program.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: use of the word "frak" in everyday life; dealings with the Sci-Fi Network; the writing process; Moore's previous work on "Deep Space Nine"; and the difference between "Battlestar Gallactica" and other television sci-fi offerings.
