CBS NEWS SPECIAL: FIVE YEARS: HOW SAFE ARE WE? {KATIE COURIC} (TV)

Summary

This program, hosted by Katie Couric at Ground Zero, explores what changes have been made to make America safer in the five years since terrorists struck the country on Sept. 11, 2001. The program begins with quick opinions from individuals about how safe they now feel. Those interviewed include a 9/11 survivor, a commercial airline pilot, a mother of two soldiers in Iraq, a mailman and a Muslim living in America. Couric then interviews President George Bush at the White House. He says that 9/11 changed his attitude on the world and redefined how he thinks as commander-in-chief. He also addresses: his regrets about the Abu Ghraib prison scandal; his meetings with families of soldiers who tell him not to let American forces leave Iraq before "the job is done"' information received from suspected terrorists about planned plots against America; and whether U.S. policies have created more terrorists than they've eliminated. Next, F.B.I. Director Robert Mueller talks to reporter Jim Stewart about why the agency's budget has doubled since 2001 and where that money has gone. New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly responds that more funds need to be allocated to NYC, as it remains a top target for terrorists. Reporter Erin Moriarty goes to Chicago and talks to Cortez Trotter, chief emergency officer, about "Operation Virtual Shield," an increased surveillance project involving 3,000 cameras deployed around the city. Reporter Lara Logan travels to Afghanistan and Iraq, asking soldiers and officials whether Iraqi insurgents and the Taliban have become stronger since American forces entered the countries. Reporter David Martin goes to the National Counter Terrorism Center, located in a Washington D.C. suburb, and observes how the state-of-the-art "nerve center" is combatting the war on terror. As the program concludes, Couric notes that the threat of another terrorist attack in America is "the new normal." This program is closed-captioned.

Cataloging of this program has been made possible by Verizon Communications.
