MAGAZINE: APRIL MAGAZINE (TV)
Summary
One in this series of daytime news programs, hosted by reporter Sharron Lovejoy. The first of three reports explores the techniques that some religious cults use to recruit young people, and the difficulties that people may have in leaving them. The program focuses on the Reverend Moon's Unification Church after the mass suicide at Jonestown, Guyana. Tom Fuller, a young man who had been a member of the church, describes the steps that led to his involvement with the church, his abduction from the cult by police and parents, and his "de-programming," which was achieved with the help of a former "Moonie." The report features comments by Dr. Margaret Singer of Berkeley, California, who studies mind control techniques, as well as clips from a congressional hearing, in which Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) defends a law that challenges the activities of religious cults. The second report profiles choreographer and dancer Agnes de Mille, and features highlights of her dancing career and aspects of her personal life. This report includes footage of de Mille working on her choreography for the piece "A Bridegroom Called Death," with dancers from The Joffrey Ballet. The third report focuses on discrimination against recovering cancer patients in the workplace, and the negative effects that such an experience has had on their lives. In the final segment of the program, Lovejoy reads excerpts of letters from viewers commenting on a report about incest that was shown on a previous program. Includes commercials.
