Summary
The fourth episode of this special series tracing the history of one black family through the generations. In this episode, beginning in December 1917, events include the following: the mutiny and hanging without trial of several black soldiers; Simon Haley's training camp experiences and combat in France; and the death of Simon's father. Highlights from the second hour include the following: Simon Haley returns from World War I; race riots erupt in the U.S.; Simon marries Bertha Palmer and they go to Cornell, where Simon studies agriculture; and Simon and Bertha return to Henning, Tennessee with their son, Alex Haley. Includes commercials.
