TWENTIETH CENTURY, THE: THE WINDSORS (TV)
Summary
One in this documentary series hosted by Walter Cronkite, which examines outstanding events and personalities of the twentieth century. In this program, Cronkite reviews the life of King Edward VIII, who abdicated the British throne in 1936. Includes footage of the following: young Edward, then Prince of Wales, visits France with his father, King George V; tours the world on a mission of good will in the early 1900's; receives the first ticker tape welcome in New York; gives a speech to the impoverished people of Britain; and spends time with his future wife, Mrs. Wallis Simpson. Also included are the announcement of the death of King George V and the coronation of King George VI. As the clips are shown, Cronkite relates facts about the events that are depicted and tells the story of the days leading up to King Edward's decision to abdicate his royal duties. Also, Cronkite interviews Sir Harold Nicholson, who was present at the Parlimentary debate over whether or not Edward would be permitted to marry a divorced woman and still remain the King of Great Britain.
