Summary

One in this documentary series hosted by Walter Cronkite, which examines outstanding events and personalities of the twentieth century. In this program, Cronkite narrates the history of the White House with the aid of drawings and photographs. Presidents from John Adams to Dwight D. Eisenhower, as well as their wives, are discussed in relation to the venerable domicile. Topics include the burning down of the White House by British forces in 1814, the Civil War, and the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln and James Garfield. Other highlights of the history of the president's home include the construction of the executive wing under Theodore Roosevelt, and its destruction by fire in 1929; the addition of a swimming pool for Franklin D. Roosevelt; and the building's renovation under Harry Truman. Commercials deleted.
