PHILCO PRESENTS THE WORLD: THE FESTIVAL FRENZY (TV)

Summary

This special projects presentation of ABC News focuses on some of the more than 600 European festivals, their events and competitions. Highlights of this program include the following: in a 300-year-old medieval festival, the districts of Sienna, Italy, compete against one another in banner throwing and bareback racing; St. Leonard, a small town in southwestern France, celebrates Bastille Day with a band concert, a fishing contest, traditional folk dances, including a bourree, and a balloon ascension honoring their native son, the scientist Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac; views of Venice, including the Grand Canal and St. Mark's Cathedral; and the Lido, the site of the 24th Venice Film Festival, with guests including Otto Preminger, Laurence Harvey, and Monica Vitti, as well as publicists promoting the film "Tom Jones"; on a private estate 50 miles from London, the Glyndebourne Opera Festival takes place, with comments by the manager and American soprano Judith Raskin; more celebrities arrive and participate in publicity events at Venice, including Rod Steiger, Claire Bloom, Gina Lollobrigida, Sean Flynn, Gov. Pat Brown (D-Calif.); at Glyndebourne, the audience arrives in evening dress with picnic baskets; in Venice, Preminger discusses the value of press exposure, and Louis Malle describes his latest film; other celebrities at Venice include Shirley Clarke, Artur Rubinstein, Martin Ritt, Tom Courtenay, and Julie Christie; in Pamplona, Spain, the festival begins with boys performing a traditional sword dance, and the bulls are raced through the town to the bull ring; in Rome, the festival is part-religious and part-feast, and during the ceremony, which is devoted to the Madonna, old women pray and do penance; and the program concludes by contrasting the celebrations in Rome and Pamplona.
