The 23rd annual presentation of the Antoinette Perry Awards for outstanding work in the Broadway theater.
Carol Burnett introduces the hosts for the evening; Art Carney and Anna Manahan in a scene from the nominated play, "Lovers"; from the nominated musical "Promises, Promises," Jerry Orbach sings "She Likes Basketball" and Donna McKechnie and company perform "Turkey Lurkey Time." Winners include Loudon Sainthill, "Canterbury Tales"; Boris Aronson, "Zorba"; Laurence Olivier and the National Theatre of Great Britain; Joe Layton, "George M"; the Negro Ensemble Company; Peter Dews, "Hadrian VII"; Ronald Holgate, "1776"; Marian Mercer, "Promises, Promises"; and Rex Harrison.
The Tonys continue with the following: James Earl Jones, Jane Alexander and others in a scene from the nominated play "The Great White Hope"; members from the company perform "Momma Look Sharp" from the nominated musical, "1776"; and the company of "Hair," including Melba Moore, perform "Three- Five-Zero-Zero," "What a Piece of Work is Man," and "The Flesh Failures (Let the Sunshine In)."
Other winners include Leonard Bernstein; Al Pacino, "Does the Tiger Wear a Necktie?"; Jane Alexander, "The Great White Hope"; Peter Hunt, "1776"; Carol Burnett; James Earl Jones, "The Great White Hope"; Julie Harris, "Forty Carats"; Jerry Orbach, "Promises, Promises"; Angela Lansbury, "Dear World"; and Vanessa Redgrave and Dustin Hoffman give the Best Play award to Howard Sackler, "The Great White Hope."
Zero Mostel presents the Tony for the best musical to Peter Stone, Sherman Edwards, and Stuart Ostrow for "1776." Program concludes with hosts Alan King and Diahann Carroll singing "The Party's Over." Includes commercials.
