MASTERPIECE THEATRE: CAKES AND ALE {EPISODE 1} (TV)
Summary
Part one of this three-part dramatization of the novel by W. Somerset Maugham about a promiscuous English barmaid named Rosie Gann and the men in her life. In this portion, Rosie is fondly recalled in flashbacks by Willie Ashenden, a playwright who was a rural adolescent when he first met Rosie and her new husband, a struggling young novelist named Edward Driffield. After the flashback, Edward's second wife, Amy Driffield, asks Roy Kear to write a biography of the recently departed Edward Driffield. Roy and Amy worry that Willie may also write a biography, one that will mention Rosie and her unconventional behavior. (This copy of this program does not include commentary by Alistair Cooke.)
