JUDE THE OBSCURE {PART 4 OF 6}: TO SHASTON (TV)

Summary

Part four of this six-part adaptation of Thomas Hardy's nineteenth-century novel, "Jude the Obscure." This drama focuses on an impoverished, young English stonemason named Jude Fawley whose ambitions are repeatedly frustrated by the repressive, class-conscious society in which he lives. In part four, "To Shaston," Sue marries the schoolmaster Richard Phillotson in a fit of jealousy when she learns of Jude's earlier marriage to Arabella. She doesn't love Richard, however, and soon seeks to end their marriage in order that she may live with Jude, who is her only relative following the death of Aunt Drusilla. Richard frees her from the marriage, though realizing their separation will probably be ruinous to his career. Sue joins Jude but disappoints him because her love for him is more spiritual than physical.

(This series also aired on PBS under the umbrella of "Masterpiece Theatre" from October 3, 1971 through November 7, 1971.)
