MASTERPIECE THEATRE: TO SERVE THEM ALL MY DAYS {PART 1 OF 13} (TV)

Summary

Part two of thirteen. One in this ongoing series of dramas presented under the title of "Masterpiece Theatre," hosted by Alistair Cooke. This television adaptation of R. F. Delderfield's novel portrays life at Bamfylde, an English public boys' school, as seen through the eyes of teacher David Powlett-Jones during the years between the two world wars. In this episode, David Powlett-Jones, the young, shell-shocked son of a Welsh miner, returns from World War I and seeks a teaching post at Bamfylde. He's sure that his working-class background and post-war nervous tremors will disqualify him for the position, but much to his surprise, the affable, optimistic headmaster Algy Herries takes a liking to him and believes he's a natural teacher. David gets off to a rocky start with the other teachers, and his first class is uncooperative. However, he begins to gain the students' respect when he outsmarts them trying to play a trick on him, and teaches them to use their imaginations and to think for themselves. As the episode ends, the war intrudes on the boys' idyllic existence, and David must relive his experiences at the front when consoling a student over his father's death during battle. Continues with T86:1279.

(This particular episode does not feature an introduction by Alistair Cooke.)
