INDEPENDENT FOCUS: PERMANENT VACATION (TV)
Summary
One in this weekly series showcasing the innovative works of independent film and video makers. The story follows the life of Aloysious Parker, a young wanderer with no home, no school, and no job. While drifting through the slums of New York City, he has passing encounters with its oddball inhabitants. Parker meets a crazy, shell- shocked Vietnam War veteran in the bombed-out building where he was born; visits his hopelessly insane mother in a mental institution; stumbles upon a neurotic Latino woman singing on a fire escape; and while at a movie theater, hears an odd tale from a mentally impaired black man. Parker drives off with a stolen car and sells it to an illegal garage for $800. He then returns to his girlfriend's apartment to pack. While waiting for the ship that will take him to Europe, he talks to a newly arrived French immigrant. In the end, Allie, explaining that he is not one to settle down and be content with security, describes himself as a "certain kind of tourist on permanent vacation."
